Kapuwa
In Sri Lankan culture, a Kapuwa is a traditional matchmaker who plays a central role in arranging marriages. Particularly in rural areas, the Kapuwa acts as an intermediary between families, helping identify suitable partners based on social status, family background, horoscope compatibility, and personal traits. Their role is especially prominent in Sinhalese and Tamil communities, where arranged marriages have historically been the norm.
A Kapuwa is respected for their knowledge of local families, social networks, and cultural customs. Beyond merely connecting prospective brides and grooms, they often mediate negotiations, discuss dowries, and facilitate initial meetings, ensuring that both families feel comfortable with the arrangement. Their involvement carries both practical and ceremonial significance, as they uphold traditions that have been passed down for generations.
In modern Sri Lanka, while dating and self-selected marriages are increasingly common, Kapuwas still operate in many villages and towns, preserving a link to cultural heritage. They are considered trusted advisors whose judgment is valued, particularly when it comes to family reputation and social harmony.
